Everyday (Monday - Thursday), your child will have 3 contracts to complete nightly. This will be the only homework your child will have unless they do not complete their work in our room. I will give them plenty of time to complete their daily assignments in class. I will be conferences with the students daily on their contracts either individually or in a whole group setting. These contracts must be kept in the daily folder one on each page.
Reading Contract: For the first semester, every student is expected to read a fiction book of their choice for 10 minutes out loud to an adult, and then 10 minutes silently. After they have finished reading, they must write 3 - 4 sentences to tell me about what they read. They are not allowed to copy the book. They must put the book down and write what they remember in complete sentences. If they need to look back at the book for a name or a spelling, this is acceptable. This assignment should take approximately 20 minutes. The second semester will consist of a non-fiction book of their choice.
Math Contract: The math contract will consist of 5 problems a night. Some of the problems will be things we haven't covered yet. I am asking the students to try their best on these problems. You may help them how to figure out the answer, but you may not give them the answer. They need to learn how to think about questions and how to answer them. I will only grade these on their completion of the contract unless I find out that they are not even trying to find the correct answer. This should take 5-10 minutes.
Language Contract: This contract has five grammar questions including two sentences that need to corrected. It also has a very short passage with 4 multiple choice questions. The students need to learn to dig into the text to find their answer, not guess on what they just read. In addition, there is usually a short answer question that the students will need to answer in 1-2 sentences. This should take approximately 10-15 minutes.
